I know I can just make a review on Amazon about this book, but I want to do a semi in-depth review on this book to hopefully turn some people on to this book who are interested in its topics of discussion. Let's just say that this book is a must read for anyone who loves history, enjoys military history, loves guns, and who want to learn more about the evolution of machine guns, the AK-47, the M16, and the methods and intended methods of use by their designers and the military commanders.
The Author, C.J. Chivers, did an incredible amount of research that is detailed at the back of the book and takes up 30 pages on its own to highlight his references and notes for each section of the book. He also has a long list of acknowledgements that reach out and give credit to many people involved in what appears to be an extensive project of gathering data and information on the accurate history that supported the writing of this book. I appreciate this level of commitment and dedication to truth, instead of opinion and assumptions. This book does a terrific job describing and illustrating a detailed narrative about the Gatling gun, and the evolution, upgrades and advancements it made since it was brought into the world. I found it fascinating to understand the mindset behind the maker of the system and the true motives behind the design. For those who want to know about the Maxim machine gun, I think you will find this book more than accommodating in that arena as well. This book is riddled with historic accounts of these guns being used in battle and the personal accounts of their performance in combat. i personally appreciate the knowledge that the author shares with us about how the machine gun was originally designed to be employed in battle and how they had to be modified and adapted to fit the conditions and tactics of the wars that were being fought. So many advancements and so many designs that struggled to stay relevant, but suddenly just disappeared and were all but forgotten. It is amazing to see, in this book, how such brilliant men devoted so much knowledge, experience, and complex engineering into perfecting the slaughter of other men by soldiers merely taking orders to kill as many people as they can until victory is achieved in war, with the gun.
