The SAR CM9 is an updated generation of the pistol we called the K2P. The K2P was actually known as the CM9 to Sarsilmaz, but ended up having its' name changed when it was imported. The CM9 Gen2 is supposed to be an upgrade to the original CM9 with a more streamlined design and more attractive aesthetics. I have no experience with the original design, but it would seem that the CM9 Gen2 may have missed a few things or gone overboard in a few of the upgrades and changes. The first thing that is a notable difference between the two generations of the CM9 is the grip. The grip of the CM9 Gen2 is a bit smooth, but it has subtle finger grooves that seem to do a pretty good job of keeping your hand on the grip securely. The backstraps can be changed by punching out a tight fitting roll pin. According the to pictures and videos that I have seen, the K2P(CM9) had a bit more of a busy frame. There were lots of rises and boxy points on the pistol, and the CM9 Gen2 seemed to eliminate most of that. Whether this had a durability or functional effect, I am not sure. I will say that the CM9 seems to have a utilitarian, no B.S. look to it, on the frame at least. The serrations on the slide seem to have been altered as well. I can not attest to the change in effectiveness, but I will say that they have a considerable amount of snag to them. Also, I find that this slide is easily gripped like any conventional slide design. Some people smear the design by claiming that the slide is not easy to manipulate. There are a few other minor changes between the two pistols, but overall it is accepted as being an overall improvement. I would say that the CM9 Gen2 is a streamlined and a well designed pistol. Both generations of the CM9 are basically the same functionally. But it is debatable whether or not it is truly an upgrade. Perhaps it is merely another generation or version that is available.
