When it comes to choosing a firearm to carry, the civilian market is riddled with opinions that seem less educated and more emotional. People love using comparisons with little consideration of factors that truly make the difference for the end user. The Sig P239 SAS is a less popular Sig Sauer pistol that gets very little credit, and is in fact considered outdated and useless overall. I am going to go over the pistol and review the characteristics it provides, and hopefully open your mind as a reader and a potential user of this pistol. The first thing everyone will see when they pick up the pistol is the fact that it is far from being the lightest or thinnest pistol on the market. In fact, you may find that it is incredibly comparable in size and weight to the newly re-released P225-A1. The pistol was originally, like the P225, designed for Law Enforcement, but the P239 was specifically designed to satisfy the requests of DHS, the NCIS, and ICE. In fact, in 2004, Sig supplied 65,000 of these babies to the government. Obviously they saw it to be a good option, even in 2004 when there were lighter and smaller options available elsewhere. I wonder why they decided to go with this pistol. Hmmmm. The Sig P239 SAS is an enhanced version of the P239 that has been optimized to serve in a concealed carry role. All the edges are rounded and smooth, and the pistol also features a short reset trigger and night sights. Not a bad package, but for over $900 you may find better options. Fortunately for me, I paid a bit less for mine in the range of $700. That is the price you may expect to pay for a lightly used example. As far as whether this pistol is worth your consideration, we need to look at how it functions. First off, the pistol is relatively comparable in size to the Walther PPS M1 with a 7 round magazine, yet it has one extra round. The grip is slim and somewhat squared, but it points very naturally. When shooting the pistol, the recoil on the pistol is very subdued and the pistol is pretty easy to handle. However, I will say that though the recoil and flip are pretty low, it does provide a bit of a thump to your hand when firing. Personally, I would love to try this pistol in a .40 or .357Sig to see the difference in handling characteristics. Overall, I don't think that the P239 is worthless, but it may not be the best option for everyone. I can tell you that I feel very comfortable carrying mine, despite the weight. The slight downside of weight is overcome by the ability to shoot this pistol accurately It is built pretty well for being a US made Sig, and I actually like the shooting characteristics. But that is just my evaluation after using this pistol. It is not perfect as a carry pistol, but it sure fits that role very well and will make you happy if you let it fill that role.
