In a zombie apocalypse, there is a certain set of things that are highly needed in order to make survival much easier and manageable. In this article I am going to analyze each item and talk about how they can help you in day-to-day life, or even in a pinch. Most of it is obvious, but some things might not have entered your mind unless you were thinking a bit more unconventionally. MILITARY JUNGLE BOOTS I am rarely a fan of military gear, but I find that the jungle boot design has a lot of merit for supporting and protecting your feet during long distance treks across multiple different types of terrains. I personally have a fondness for the Bates Recondo boots for their light weight, high traction, and breathability. I am sure that there will be no shortage of shoes in the apocalypse, but there will be a shortage of morale if you have to walk through vicious brush, terrain, or weather with poor footwear. Don’t forget that the shoes you pick will also have to serve as a ram, hammer, and melee weapon as well. COMBAT UNIFORMS In the interests of durability, camouflage, and storage capacity, I would recommend having some uniforms whether surplus or a close copy like those made by Helikon-Tex. They may not have been used by the military, but I do recommend using something akin to the BDU for its storage capability. The type of camouflage pattern you use will depend on your area, which means that the UCP uniforms are all but useless unless you are in a quarry or are able to get around to dying the fabric. I recommend sticking to a twill weave if you can swing it since it is resistant to tears, scuffs, fading, and is a great insulator in cold weather. I would personally choose buttons over Velcro and zippers since the latter are noise factories and harder to repair. 550 CORD This may seem like a no-brainer but 550 cord is useful for more than just tying up shelter or drying clothes. It can serve as a weapon, a restraint, for fashioning simple traps, making noisemakers for distractions, and for fire-starting implements like a fire bow. In a pinch, it can even be used as a climbing or rappelling rope. If you know how to fashion knots and have an imagination, 1000’ of 550 cord can be priceless. And don't forget to lanyard or "dummy-cord" all your valuables to you. 550 cord will make that simple and it will last, thanks to it being made of long-lasting nylon. BIC LIGHTER When the grid goes down and you no longer have power or gas, you will need to find ways to take care of yourself. It is said that fire is life, and it simply is in this scenario. Fire on demand is invaluable and allows you to do so many things. You can use fire to stay warm, light a path, cook food, sterilize water, and even fashion tools. In some situations, your Bic lighter can be used to light a fire to start a strategic fire for deception, as a signal, or as a weapon. You can even use fire to harden sharpened wooden sticks. Don’t underestimate the usefulness of fire. DIFFERENT STROKES I am sure that everyone has an idea of what items hold a high price to them. For some people medications are important due to health reasons, but I have always found these specific items to be useful in fashioning and improvising things that are needed for survival. After all, the apocalypse isn't about having fun...it is about surviving.
